It Gives New Meaning to the Term Bluetooth

We’ve all seen the decreasing size of Bluetooth headsets and microphones since most cellular phones began including Bluetooth as a standard feature. Recently, microphones that use jaw vibrations to detect speech have become available. The amazing bone-conduction technology that makes this possible means that you can talk in an extremely noisy environment with no interruption to your conversation. Rather than using sound waves from the air, the devices pick up vibrations from your jaw and translate them into speech on the other end of the conversation.

Although that is futuristic enough on its own, Chinavasion now brings us news of an in-tooth Bluetooth microphone that will take hands-free communication to a whole new level. It seems hard to believe, but apparently it’s true: you will soon be able to have a microphone implanted in your tooth. There’s no price associated with the product just yet, but there is a stern warning against drilling the hole in your tooth yourself.

Besides making you look like you have a permanent piece of food wedged in your teeth, this device seems rather weird in a cyborgs-are-going-to-slowly-take-over kind of way. Obviously any gadget that you have permanently installed in a part of your body has the potential to create some problems in the future. What about when it breaks, or when it’s time to upgrade?

The item was added to the Chinavasion website on March 31st…is it a cleverly accomplished April Fool’s Day gag, or a convenient way to keep in touch through amazing technology?

*Update April 3: After we posted about this product, Chinavasion added an explanation to the product’s page: it was an April Fool’s Day gag, after all!  Well played to Chinavasion,  and thanks to reader Frank for bringing our attention to Chinavasion’s update.
